Referred to as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, the small island nation of Sri Lanka has long captivated travellers with its rich cultural heritage, dreamy mountainous landscapes, friendly people and glimmering beaches. Destinations such as Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella, Mirissa and Galle are not only picturesque, but steeped in history. Now - as we step into 2024 and beyond you may be asking – Is Sri Lanka Worth Visiting?

With changing travel trends and evolving local dynamics, it’s important to consider what Sri Lanka has to offer to travelers. This post will explore and investigate if Sri Lanka remains a must-visit destination in 2024.

The Current Situation in Sri Lanka

If you've considered visiting Sri Lanka in recent years, you may have heard about the challenges this beautiful country faced just a short time ago. While some of these issues can be traced back to 2019 and earlier, the situation reached a critical point in 2022, when Sri Lanka grappled with shortages of essential goods such as food, fuel, medicine, and gas. Inflation, currency devaluation, and widespread power cuts added to the country's woes, raising concerns among potential tourists.

Fortunately, the situation has improved significantly since then, benefiting both Sri Lankans and visitors alike. Tourist arrivals steadily on the rise, and issues like food shortages and power cuts have become virtually non-existent for travellers. During our visit in 2024, we experienced none of these problems and enjoyed a seamless travel experience from start to finish.

A significant part of our positive travel experience can be attributed to careful planning and smart decision-making, including our choice of tour provider—Lanka Safe Tours. Why Sri Lanka Should Be on Your Travel List

Now that we’ve explained Sri Lanka’s current situation to you, let’s get to the exciting stuff! Here are some reasons why this stunning country should absolutely be on your travel list.

1. Breathtaking Natural Beauty

Scenes from Nuwara Eliya, a tea plantation area in Sri Lanka

From pristine beaches to lush rainforests and serene tea plantations, Sri Lanka’s natural beauty is truly captivating. The island’s diverse landscapes include the golden sands of Mirissa, the stunning views of Ella’s mountainous region, and the dramatic scenery Sigiriya – also know as Lion Rock.

Stunning views atop Sigiriya Rock

There’s no two ways about it – Sri Lanka is a visual feast for the eyes. You will be impressed with its nature, and you will be urging to come back for more at the end of trip.

2. Rich Cultural Heritage

Dambulla is one of Sri Lanka’s best cultural and religious destinations

Sri Lanka boasts a rich tapestry of cultural heritage that spans thousands of years. The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa offer glimpses into the island’s storied past, while the Sacred City of Kandy is home to the revered Temple of the Tooth. The island’s unique blend of Buddhist, Hindu, and colonial influences provides a unique and fascinating cultural experience.

Some of our favourite cultural sites included the Royal Cave Temple of Dambulla, Bahirawakanda Temple and Gangaramaya Temple.

3. Friendly and Hospitable Locals

View of Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, Sri Lanka

I was deeply moved by the warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people. Renowned for their friendliness and welcoming nature, locals consistently go out of their way to make visitors feel at home.

From our private driver, Dinesh (from Lanka Safe Tours) to the staff at our accommodation, to even local kids on the street – everyone was so friendly and helpful to us. I honestly didn’t feel uncomfortable at any stage of my trip.

4. Delicious and Diverse Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine is a delicious adventure for the taste buds. From the aromatic and spicy curries to the flavourful hoppers and sambols, the island’s food is a reflection of its rich cultural diversity. Street food markets and local eateries offer a chance to sample authentic dishes that are both delicious and unique to Sri Lankan culture.

I must admit, I wasn’t very familiar with Sri Lankan cuisine before this trip, but now I’m completely hooked! Some of our favourite Sri Lankan dishes that we would recommend include Kukul mas curry (chicken curry), dhal curry (lentil curry), and wambatu moji (eggplant pickle).

5. Wildlife & Safari Galore

Monkeys near Dambulla Royal Cave Temple

Although we didn’t have the opportunity to go on a wildlife safari during our trip, Sri Lanka is an amazing destination for those interested in animal encounters. The country’s nature reserves, such as Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park, and Minneriya National Park, are renowned for their incredible wildlife spotting opportunities.

Here, you can observe Sri Lanka’s diverse fauna, including majestic elephants, elusive leopards, and a variety of bird species. For marine life enthusiasts, whale watching off the coast of Mirissa provides an unforgettable chance to see majestic blue and sperm whales in their natural habitat. If wildlife experiences are on your agenda, Sri Lanka is truly the place to be!

The Best Way to Visit Sri Lanka in 2024: Sri Lanka Private Driver

By far, the best way to explore and get around Sri Lanka in 2024 is by hiring a private driver. Despite Sri Lanka’s relatively small size, traveling from the far north to the far south can still take up to 10 hours. Therefore, choosing a reputable driver and tour company is essential.

Public transport in Sri Lanka tends to be slow, so opt for a private driver

While Sri Lanka does have a public bus system, it tends to be slow, prone to delays, and primarily designed for locals, so I wouldn’t recommend relying on public transport for tourists. Additionally, driving in Sri Lanka can be challenging due to narrow, winding roads, especially in the highlands, so it’s best to leave the driving to an experienced local.

We spent weeks carefully evaluating our options before selecting Lanka Safe Tours, and it was a decision we never regretted. With 11 years of experience and perfect 5-star reviews across platforms like TripAdvisor, Google, and Viator, we felt confident entrusting our safety and travel experience to them.

How Many Days in Sri Lanka?

Ralph at Bahirawakanda Temple

The ideal number of days to spend in Sri Lanka depends on your interests and travel style. Here’s a general guide:

  1. Short Trip (3-6 days): Focus on a few key highlights. You might explore Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, and a beach destination like Mirissa or Galle. This timeframe allows you to experience a mix of cultural sites, natural beauty, and relaxation.

  2. Moderate Trip (7-11 days): This duration allows for a more comprehensive experience. You can visit Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Ella, and a beach destination. You’ll have time for a safari in Yala or Udawalawe, and some relaxation time on the coast.

  3. Extended Trip (12-14 days or more): An extended trip gives you the opportunity to explore more regions in depth. You can cover Colombo, Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Jaffna and even more. This allows for a richer experience, including wildlife safaris, cultural tours, and more leisurely beach time.

In summary, 6 or 7 days is a good start for a basic itinerary, 10 days allows for a well-rounded exploration, and 2 weeks or more is ideal for a thorough experience of Sri Lanka's diverse offerings. Having said that, any number of days is better than not visiting at all.
