Hotel Review: Hotel Puerta de las Granadas
/The gorgeous Granada is one of Spain’s most heralded treasures. With the truly iconic Alhambra standing proudly as a symbol of the city, visitors are continuing to flock to this historic destination.
The Hotel Puerta de Las Granadas sits right at the foot of the Alhambra and serves as one of the city’s most popular hotels, but is it worth staying here? We investigate.
Getting to Hotel Puerta de las Granadas
Getting to the Hotel Puerta de Las Granadas is relatively straightforward. From the Granada Train Station, the hotel is only a 5 to 10-minute taxi ride or rideshare journey away. We used Uber and the cost was about 8 Euros. The cost of a taxi from the station should also be similar.
You can also take the bus from the station, although we think this is slightly more inconvenience since the Uber/taxi option is already pretty affordable and much easier. In any case, the busses you’re looking for are either bus number 4, number 21 or number 33. The bus ticket price is €1.40 and you can pay this directly to the driver. Alight at the Cathedral (Calle Gran Via) stop, and the hotel is only a 5-minute walk from here.
From the Granada Bus Station, your journey will be similar to the above. An Uber or taxi from the bus station will take just over 15 minutes and cost about 11-12 Euros. If you’re planning on taking the bus, buses number 21 and number 33 will get you to the hotel. Once again – get off at the Cathedral (Calle Gran Via) stop and you’ll reach the hotel after a 5-minute walk.
If you’re arriving from Granada Airport (GRX), we would recommend taking a taxi. The taxi stand is right in front of the airport entrance and is very easy to find. The ride shouldn’t take much longer than 30 minutes and usually costs about 30 Euros. The hotel can also arrange a transfer for you if you wish.
It’s also possible to take a bus from GRX Airport, although the journey can be a little more complicated. Your best option is to take the ALSA Airport Bus that goes from the airport to Granada Bus Station. It leaves from just in front of the airport. Once you’re at Granada Bus Station, follow the instructions above to get to the hotel. The journey time of this option is about 45 minutes.
Alternatively, you can also take the local bus number 0245 headed towards the Palacio de Congresos. Get off at the Cathedral Stop and walk about 5 minutes to the hotel. The journey time of taking the local bus is about 1 hour.
As you can see, the hotel is in a very central location. Apart from being located right at the foot of Alhambra at the Puerta de las Granadas, one of the beautiful entrance gates to the palace complex, the hotel is also only a few minutes’ walk to Granada’s other major attractions such as the Granada Cathedral, Plaza Isabel la Catolica, Corral del Carbon, and Plaza Nueva de Granada. When staying at Hotel Puerta de las Granadas, you’ll find yourself right in the centre of all the action in Granada.
My room at the Hotel Puerta de Las Granadas
My spacious Studio Gomerez Room was exquisite. Starting from the lounge area – I loved chilling out in this space and going between the room and the wonderful balcony. From the balcony, I was able to access a panoramic view of the pretty streets of Granada and feel the bustling atmosphere. I actually spent a considerable amount of time in this area catching up with work and was able to relax and focus really easily.
As the hotel is housed in a historic 19th century building, the remarkable Andalusian touch is always ever-present, but combined with a modern interior design touch.
The bedroom area itself was super spacious and featured another balcony – although this one constructed in a way where the balcony was almost like its own separate room. My suite also featured not one, but two showers and toilets! Overall, I really loved staying in my room.
Food and Beverage at Hotel Puerta de las Granadas
Hotel Puerta de las Granadas is home to the popular restaurant, Alarique. At Alarique, you can find exquisite tapas and the best of Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant is rated very highly on Google, so I would recommend you check it out when staying at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel was also great. I loved their tasty combination of sausage, bacon and baked beans. We’ve had long of ‘English breakfast’ style breakfast buffets at hotels over the years, and this one ranks highly. Breakfast is served at the tastefully decorated dining hall, one floor down from the lobby.
Facilities, Hotel Grounds & Other Activities
For a relatively small boutique hotel, I was really surprised at the number of facilities on offer at the Hotel Puerta de las Granadas. My favourite of these was the rooftop bar and terrace. This terrace honestly featured one of the best views over Granada during my time in the city, and was the perfect place to watch the sun go down over some drinks.
Next up, I also loved the little library. So cute and such a nice touch by the hotel to come up with this idea. A great space to just chill out, unwind and relax during your stay.
The hotel also houses a well-equipped fitness centre. Not many boutique hotels offer a gym as part of their facilities, so this was a welcome inclusion!
Staff
The staff at the Hotel Puerta de las Granadas were legends. Everyone here was super friendly and helpful at all times. In particular, the hotel manager, Conchita helped me with so many things during my stay, including finding my sunglasses that I accidentally left behind at the hotel!
Final Verdict – Should I stay at the Hotel Puerta de las Granadas?
Honestly, I can’t recommend the Hotel Puerta de las Granadas enough. Here are some reasons my stay here will stick out in my mind:
Although the hotel is located in a beautiful 19th century building, it combines its rustic elements with fresh, modern interior design
The location is unbeatable in Granada, in my opinion – super close to all major attractions in the city
Despite being a quaint boutique hotel, there are so many facilities to occupy your time here
The staff were some of the friendliest and most helpful during my trip to Europe.
