Gozo is a tiny island packed with beautiful sights, but little-known Tal Mixta is a standout, so you should go now before it’s been completely discovered by tourists. When we visited, it was pretty much just us and one other family visiting this hidden cave.

What is it?

Tal Mixta Cave is a picturesque cave high up in the hills of Nadur, a small village with a population of around 4500 people.

The cave essentially acts as a window for one of the grandest views you’ll ever see in Malta. Through the wide crevice of the cave, visitors will be able to witness a breathtaking panorama of Ramla Bay, one of Gozo’s widest and most famous beaches.

How do I get there?

The only practical way to get there is by driving, unless you’re prepared to walk up a very steep hill.

You can reach Tal Mixta Cave by driving. A small car will do!

No matter where you’re coming from in Gozo, all cars will have to reach the end of the Triq I-Ghassa tal-Mahrag road. This road is narrow and a little bumpy, but our little hatchback still made it with no problems, so you should be alright no matter what car you’re driving. We booked our car from Europcar and didn’t have any issues.

Once you reach the end of this road, park your car and walk about 5 minutes to the entrance of the cave. At the entrance, there will be a descending staircase that will take you to the cave.

Are there any other tips?

Be careful when you’re up there. On the way into the cave, winds can be extremely strong and enough to knock you off your feet.

No exaggeration! We’ve experienced some serious winds before, but when the wind is bad here, the force is enough to make you lose your balance. We actually contemplated not going into the cave because the winds looked too strong, but decided to tread carefully anyway and didn’t regret it.

Due to this, we only recommend going if you are relatively fit and have quick reflexes to be able to hang on to something if you ever lose balance. We wouldn’t recommend bringing small children here.

You should also secure any loose articles in a backpack or hold them close to you so that the wind doesn’t blow them away.

In saying all this, once you enter the cave, the wind isn’t actually that bad because you stop being exposed. So we would still totally recommend braving the winds and entering the cave. You can do it!
