Bulgaria Air: A Review of My Experience [2024]
/Bulgaria’s national carrier, Bulgaria Air, is no doubt a leader in the Bulgarian aviation industry. Now flying with over 20 years of history on its wings, the airline has expanded its fleet size to 14 and flies to over 26 destinations. But how does it compare on an international scale?
If you’re curious about what flying on Bulgaria Air is like, this blog article will run you through, detail by detail, what my experience was like with them.
Brief History of Bulgaria Air and Upcoming Developments
Bulgaria Air was founded in 2002 and was declared the national flag carrier by the Minister of Transport and Communications later that year. For over 20 years, Bulgaria Air has been impressing Bulgarians and the international community alike with their safety rating, food and beverage options, onboard magazine and flight network.
Just recently, the airline welcomed its third Airbus A220-300 to its fleet, an example of how fast things are expanding. The next aircraft in line will be arriving shortly, and is named the LZ-AMS.
The airline currently operates regular flights from Sofia to 29 major cities in Europe and the Middle East (including Paris, Prague, Brussels, London, Madrid and more), as well as the domestic destinations Varna and Burgas. Together with its codeshare partners, Bulgaria Air connects you to over 400 cities globally.
What route did I fly with Bulgaria Air?
I flew from Sofia Airport (SOF) in Bulgaria to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) in Italy. The flight was handled on an Embraer aircraft.

Airline Review Criteria
In my review of Bulgaria Air, I’ll break down my thoughts into the following sections:
Check-In and Bag Drop Process
Seat Design and Comfort
Timeliness
Service
Food, Beverage and Magazine
Check-In and Bag Drop Process
Checking into my Bulgaria Air flight was really convenient and easy. I was able to check-in online beforehand using the airline’s website, and once I arrived at Sofia Airport, all I had to do was drop my bags.
The bag drop off line was extremely short and I was done with the whole process within minutes.
Seat Design and Comfort
I have to say these were some of the widest seats in terms of leg room I have EVER experienced. I’m about 176cm (so, not a short guy by any means) and I was able to fully stretch out my legs without touching the next seat. As you know, this is a very rare on airplanes these days.
Other than the leg room, the seat itself was made out of a black leather design and was roomy and comfortable – no complaints here.
Timeliness
The boarding process was handled very efficiently for my flight, and so we were able to take off 10 minutes early, and land 10 minutes early as well. Full marks for this category.
Service
I definitely felt the premium experience on my flight. I felt prioritised and catered to at all times, and found the staff to be extremely friendly, attentive, comforting and helpful. Although it was only a short flight, the cabin crew were always doing something nice for us – such as handing out water, snacks, sanitised tissue etc. – the service was top notch during my journey.
Food, Beverage and Magazine
It’s not that often that airlines actually serve food and beverages anymore in this day and age, so I was pleasantly surprised when I learnt that catering was happening on board my Bulgaria Air flight. Like I previously mentioned, the flight was so short anyway so I wouldn’t have expected any food – but I was happy to receive the delicious sandwich and chocolate bar, as well as bottled water onboard.
In terms of entertainment, I thoroughly enjoyed flipping through the “On Air Bulgaria” magazine, learning more about Bulgarian culture and the destinations on offer.
Overall – Would I recommend flying with Bulgaria Air?
It’s clear by now that I only have good things to say about Bulgaria Air. Thanks to the airline’s easy check-in process, timeliness, seat comfort, helpfulness of staff and catering on board, I had a seamless and enjoyable journey from Sofia to Rome (by the way, both destinations are 100% worth visiting and exploring).
In short, yes! I would definitely recommend flying with Bulgaria Air and exploring their wide network of flights. Why not visit Sofia and explore destinations such as Varna, Berlin, Athens, Rome, Zurich, Milan and Barcelona while you’re at it?
