Hotel Review: The Siam, Bangkok

Infinity pool at The Siam.

Close your eyes and imagine lush, verdant green trees and gardens. Now add in a stunning swimming pool perched along the scenic Chao Phraya River. Sprinkle in bespoke Art Deco interior design, renowned Thai hospitality and ornaments fit for a museum. Where are you? You’re at The Siam.

The Pier, at The Siam.

I had the opportunity to stay at one of Bangkok’s top-rated hotels, an urban luxury resort oasis among Thailand’s busy capital. Featuring luxurious spacious rooms, a Muay Thai boxing ring, library, infinity pool and art gallery, The Siam promises a lot… but did it meet expectations? Let’s find out. This is a review and guide to The Siam in Bangkok.

About The Siam

Beautiful greenery at the resort.

Designed by internationally renowned architect Bill Bensley, The Siam’s unique take on hotel design is a significant reason for its acclaim. With antiques and Thai memorabilia curiously scattered across the hotel grounds, there’s always a surprise at every turn.

Featuring 38 suites and villas, each room has been intricately decorated and individually designed to ensure a personalised, curated experience. Close enough to Bangkok’s major attractions yet quiet enough for a relaxing sanctuary getaway, The Siam is strategically located in the Dusit District with easy access to the Chao Phraya River and, in turn, links to attractions such as The Grand Palace, Wat Arun, ICONSIAM and more

Getting to The Siam

Arriving at The Siam is relatively easy, as there are many public transport links from both of Bangkok’s major airports, Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). Apart from this, you can also get to The Siam using a taxi or Grab car.

A hassle-free option is to book an airport transfer with the hotel, which can be arranged by contacting the staff here. Depending on where you’re arriving from, there may also be an opportunity to catch the hotel’s Shuttle Boat which runs on fixed times. For information about the shuttle boat, click here.

My room at The Siam

An inside look at the Siam Suite.

I stayed at the Siam Suite during my stay. This room is 80 square metres and felt very, very spacious – almost like I was staying in a large apartment. I’ve taken a peak at some of the other rooms, and they all look absolutely stunning as well.

An example of the warm purple tones contrasted with monochromatic elements.

Decorated in warm tones of purple and accented by flashes of monochromatic design touches, I absolutely loved the colour scheme of my suite. The bed was a real highlight of the room – super-sized, spacious, and comfortable.

Absolutely loved the comfortable bed at The Siam.

Other than that, I enjoyed chilling out in the living area and taking a warm bath in the big bathtub.

Thoroughly enjoyed the big bathtub in my room.

Another aspect of my suite that I adored was the unique, bespoke touches of design elements – for example, my room was decked out in memorabilia from Miss Universe’s reign in 1965. In 1965, Aspara Hongsakula from Thailand was crowned Miss Universe as Thailand’s first ever winner.

Memorabilia from Miss Universe’s reign in 1965.

I’m sitting in the same chair as Miss Universe 1965 did – such a cool moment!

If you’re a pageant fan (which I happen to be), you would likely know that the majority of South East Asia loves its pageant queens, and Thailand is no different. It was really cool (and a little bit surreal) learning a little bit more about Aspara’s reign and having elements from her reign actually be in my room.

Overall, I loved my room at The Siam.

Oh, I also wanted to just mention that you casually get access to a Portier Mobile smartphone with 4G enabled. The mobile has local and international calling enabled, and you can use it to message the front desk directly (for example, if you want to order room service or book the shuttle boat).

Food and Beverage at The Siam

Dining at Chon Thai Restaurant at The Siam

The Siam is home to several dining venues. These are: Chon Thai Restaurant, The Story House, The Pier and Bathers Bar.

Clearly enjoying my breakfast here!

At Chon Thai Restaurant, I experienced The Siam’s famous all-you-can-order buffet and let me tell you – it was ground-breaking! The food here was absolutely delicious and at a much higher quality than what I’m used to for a hotel breakfast. I felt like I was eating at an award-winning restaurant every morning.

Loved the selection of Thai foods on offer for breakfast.

Every single thing I ordered, whether it be Thai food, Western food, sweets or fruits, was so, so good. Breakfast is open from 6am until 11am, which was also really convenient for late risers like me. Needless to say, my experience dining at Chon Thai was a real highlight of my stay. The restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner.

The Pier at The Siam.

I also got to enjoy spending some time at The Pier and Bathers Bar, both of which offer panoramic views of the river. The Pier in particular is a perfect place to watch the sunset with a drink in hand.

Facilities, Hotel Grounds & Other Activities

Let’s get into the facilities and other aspects of the hotel.

Like I previously alluded to, The Siam is like a playground for curious minds looking to explore. Although I tried, I don’t think I even managed to explore every nook and cranny of the resort grounds because there was so much to see and do. But I tried my best!

The Vinyl Room at The Siam.

At the Vinyl Room, I marvelled at the hotel’s vast collection of records, and had a go playing on an antique piano. On the other side of the room is a pretty balcony area with an opportunity to take photographs of the greenhouse-like structure of the hotel.

Just vibing out at the Vinyl Room.

The Gymnasium is decked out with all the gym equipment you need for a comprehensive workout, and even features a Muay Thai boxing ring. All the equipment you need to try boxing is also provided.

Memorabilia scattered around the gymnasium.

A look at the gym here.

Trying my hands at muay thai boxing (pun intended).

One of the most unique things about The Siam is that it provides its own shuttle boat service, which goes to quite a few points of interests. So not only will this save time and costs getting from point A to B in Bangkok, it’s also just a really cool way to see the river and witness a different perspective of Bangkok. Be sure to book beforehand with the front desk if you’re looking to utilise the shuttle boat service.

Gorgeous infinity pool at The Siam – a scene stealer.

Loved relaxing at the infinity pool.

The pool is right next to this view of the river.

Of course, the attention-stealing infinity pool (and connecting Children’s splash pool) makes is not only extremely photogenic, but also very relaxing to swim in. The sunbeds in front of the pool are also the perfect location for some sunbathing.

Connie’s Cottage is a venue where artists’ works are featured.

Inside Connie’s Cottage.

At Connie’s Cottage, The Siam offers artists residencies to show off their works. When I visited, works by Jim Thompson and Bill Bensley were on display.

Giving snooker a go at the hotel.

You can also go for a game of snooker at the hotel.

Chilling at out the lobby of the hotel.

I never really mention the lobby as part of my hotel reviews becase to be honest, a lot of them are not very spectacular. However, I wanted to give a special shout out to the lobby area at The Siam because it was absolutely exquisite, and a favourite photography location of mine during my stay.

Curio (Gift Store, antique and art gallery).

Other features include:

  • Library with Screening Room

  • Meeting room for 20 attendees

  • Curio – gift shop, antique and art gallery

  • Opium Spa & Wellbeing

  • Private Yoga and Tai Chi class

Staff

How were the staff at The Siam?

Thailand’s hospitality is second to none, and the service I received at The Siam only confirmed this. Not only were the staff helpful and attentive, but they would go out of their way and be proactive in asking me if I needed anything – whether it be related to dining, the shuttle boat, housekeeping or airport transfers.

The staff at The Siam were always very helpful and friendly.

During my stay, I would ask them non-hotel related questions about sightseeing, bars and dining experiences, and they gave me some really quality recommendations. Overall, the staff at The Siam were helpful and brilliant!

Final Verdict – Should I stay at The Siam?

So did The Siam exceed my expectations?

It’s rare that I would rave about a hotel this much, but honestly, The Siam deserves it. The rooms were top notch. The hotel design is one-of-a-kind. The staff were world-class. What more can I say? The best way I can describe The Siam is that it’s a luxury resort, world-class dining venue, museum and art gallery combined into one. I absolutely treasured my stay at The Siam, and I know that I will be back one day soon. My only regret is that I didn’t stay longer!

I can’t speak more highly of The Siam – my stay here was very memorable.

If you’re headed to Bangkok, then you should definitely consider staying at The Siam.

If you ever get the opportunity to stay at The Siam, I couldn’t recommend it enough. While it may not be a budget experience, staying at The Siam is unforgettable, and completely worth it.
