What is Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery?
Once a little-known hidden gem in Hong Kong, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery has quickly been gaining popularity due to its striking red colours, and Instagram-worthy structures. It is one of Hong Kong’s most decorated religious sites.
This temple complex was built in the 1950s and features 5 temples, 4 pavilions and 1 tall pagoda. The most impressive part of the temple is actually the entrance, which features a climb up 430 steps. While you’re climbing, you’ll be greeted by golden Buddha statues on either side of you. The walk should take approximately 20-25 minutes.

By Foot
We stayed in the Sha Tin area so we actually walked from our accommodation to Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery in about 10 minutes. We chose to walk because there were a few attractions we wanted to tick off in Sha Tin, including the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. This is something you could also consider doing on the way to the monastery if you were already in the area.
From the popular New Town Plaza Shopping Centre, the monastery is about a 17-minute walk.

Hong Kong Taxi’s and rideshare fares are notoriously quite expensive, so we wouldn’t really recommend this option unless you were short on time.
From Tsim Sha Tsui, a 20-minute car ride will get you Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery.
Any other tips on visiting Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery?
The steps are deceivingly difficult to climb. Although the steps look short, the hill’s incline is actually quite steep. On a hot day, you might be tired and drenched in sweat by the end of your climb! Don’t underestimate the hike – you should definitely visit this monastery, but bring water, a hat and sunscreen if the weather calls for it.
Also, don’t confuse the monastery with the nearby cemetery. To avoid the confusion, make sure you turn right into Sheung Wo Che Street, where a government building and post office will be after you exit from Exit B of Sha Tin Station. If you don’t make the right turn and go straight, you’ll end up at the cemetery.
