What is Hong Kong’s Innovation Tower?
The Jockey Club Innovation Tower was first completed in mid-2013 and has since been attracting attention from visitors around the world. Designed and conceptualised by Pritzker-prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, its cutting edge design is one of Hong Kong’s best examples of modern, contemporary architecture.
Hadid designed the building with a view to build “a beacon structure symbolising...the development of Hong Kong as a design hub in Asia”. Part of Hong Kong Polytechnic University, today, the building is used as a centre for bright-minded and innovative students to hone their design and architecture skills. Able to accommodate over 1,800 staff and students, the tower boasts over 12,000 sq metres in floor area. The tower cost a whopping 249 million HKD to build.
Since then, both the tower’s interior and exterior have impressed many visitors.
How to get to Jockey Club Innovation Tower
Getting to the Jockey Club Innovation Tower is easy, and you have a few options of getting there too.
By MTR
The closest MTR station to Innovation Tower is the Jordan Station, which is reachable by using the Tsuen Wan Line bound for Tsuen Wan. From Jordan Station, Innovation tower is about a 10-minute walk away.
Alternatively, you can also alight at Hung Hom Station, which is reachable via the East Rail Line bound for Hung Hom. From the station, Innovation Tower is about a 13-minute walk away.
By Foot
You’ll be pleased to know that Innovation Tower is located only a 15-minute walk away from Tsim Sha Tsui, where most visitors stay.
This is good news, as visiting other popular attractions such as the Avenue of Stars, the Symphony of Lights, Bruce Lee Statue, Star Ferry, Hong Kong Space Museum and the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade in a single day are completely doable if you’re walking.
By Car
Innovation Tower is centrally located in the Kowloon Area, so is accessible from pretty much anywhere in Hong Kong.
From the popular tourist area of Tsim Sha Tsui, the tower is only a 5-minute drive.
By Bus
There are many bus routes that you can take to Innovation Tower, depending on where you are in Hong Kong. For example, buses 101, 103, 104, 111, 113 and 182 will all bring you within a 10-minute walk away from the tower.
If you’re confused, it’s best to get to Tsim Sha Tsui first and just walk from there, as the bus routes in Hong Kong can get a little confusing (we would recommend using the MTR over the bus).
Are there any other tips for visiting the Jockey Club Innovation Tower?
Although visitors are welcome, just remember that the tower is an active building used by a university. This means students use this facility as a place to study. You can take pictures, but be respectful and don’t be too noisy as you tour the building.
This also applies to visiting places like the Monster Building or Choi Hung Estate Basketball Courts.
Other than that, there’s no entrance fee and you’re free to visit whenever you want (day time is best for pictures, though).
If you want to read more about the history of the tower and events being held there, you can head to The Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Official Website here.
